Jul 29, 2010 - Mangum Rides Consistency To League Championship Series Lead
(Fayetteville, NC July 28, 2010) Just like many of the weekly races themselves, the battle for the City Chevrolet League Championship Series (LCS) crown is developing into one of the most intense competitions the sport has ever seen. Numerous race teams still have a mathematical chance to win the LCS crown and dozens still have the opportunity to cash in on the 20 position payout at the end of the season. The series takes into account a driver’s top 14 finishes in weekly events at NDRA sanctioned tracks and while some are closing in on their 14 races, others have competed in additional events in hopes of replacing any mediocre performances. With the season beginning to wind down, one can only expect the race to the championship and its $5000 payday to intensify.
Heading into this past weekend Lancaster, South Carolina’s Timbo Mangum sat atop the LCS standings. Mangum, with his 5 wins and 14 top 3 finishes, has accumulated the majority of his points at Lancaster Speedway. Ron Parker, who also leads the touring point standings, trails Mangum by only 10 points. Parker has used solid finishes at a variety of NDRA tracks to amass his current point total. Steve Banal, Jordan Anderson, and Larry Blankenship, round out the top 5 in the standings. Like Parker, Banal has traveled to various tracks to accumulate his LCS points. Meanwhile, Anderson has remained close to home at Carolina Speedway while Blankenship, who started out the season at 311 Speedway, now races frequently at Friendship Speedway.
Many of the drivers vying for position in the LCS standings are now approaching the 14 race minimum required for the championship. Gary Puckett, Justin Hudspeth, Steve Hendren, Greg Barker, and Jason Pack currently round out the top 10. The race for the championship is constantly changing as drivers are approaching the point of the season where strong showings can replace previously unsuccessful finishes. “This is one of the most competitive battles I have ever seen”, stated Association Director Larry Lee. “Each week and each individual race is important and I expect both the championship and many of the final positions to be determined on the final weekend of competition. I am looking forward to seeing the updated standings after this weekend’s events.” For more information about City Chevrolet and the League Championship Series, please visit www.citychevrolet.com, www.citycratemotors.com, and www.ndraracing.com
